Every nation needs to commemorate important moments in its own history to understand and appreciate how it has grown and where it has now moved to.  This is twice as much true this year when Slovakia commemorates the 25th anniversary of Slovak statehood as well as the 100-year common journey of the Czechs and Slovaks to democracy.  This was stated today (31 January) by State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Ivan Korčok, who laid a symbolic bouquet of appreciation at M. R. Štefánik’s memorial plaque in a park at the square of the same name in Paris during a ceremony at the end of his working visit to France.  “There are not many persons who have so significantly influenced our modern history as General Štefánik. He played an important role not only in creating the first post-war common state of Czechs and Slovaks but also in leaving his message on which the principles of our diplomacy is now based.  General Štefánik deserves our recognition," stated Korčok.  He added that it is characteristic that today we have a dialogue and put our ideas on the table to discuss the EU future with just the country where Štefánik was active and that was instrumental in the fight by Czechs and Slovaks for their own state. “Our presence is about compromises, about a common vision. The vision about which our two nations – the Czech and the Slovak – have dreamed of,” stated State Secretary Korčok.
